Once-Sweltry Summer Evening
Think back to your childhood bedtime ritual. Not everyone's is similar, of course, and memories over time can become hazy and incorrectly recollected. Here's one version that could have happened: it's early June, and the weather has been overly hot and muggy for days. When evening descends there is a stagnant stillness to the outdoors. This evening, however, has been chilled from an unexpected nip, and man and creature alike are torpid from the relief.
You have just finished a long hot shower and you are getting ready for bed. The temperature is slowly dropping, and a slight breeze from outside helps to make you sleepy. The city sounds are distant beyond one window, while cicadas and katydids sing loudly from the edge of the wood through the other. The hot temperature of the shower water and the quick cooling thereafter has made you sluggish, so you spend longer than usual running through the motions. To the west, twilight is fading to true night as the mercury descends a little further. Maybe tonight you will sleep comfortably.
